No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu and Submission Grappling in East Tampa

Every adult class here is no-gi. Jiu-jitsu and wrestling, all levels.

Gi vs no-gi

Traditional gi is a jacket and pants, with a heavy focus on grips and collars. No-gi is basic gym attire — shorts and a t-shirt.

Show up in what you would wear to the gym. Shorts without pockets or zippers, and a t-shirt or rash guard. There is nothing to buy before your first class.

Nobody throws a punch here. You tap, you reset, you go again.

More on how we train

Position before submission

It is the oldest advice in jiu-jitsu and it is the first thing people ignore. You see the arm, you go for the arm, and a second later the position is gone and you are underneath somebody wondering how you got there.

Control comes first. Get past the legs, settle your weight, take away whatever they are using to get out. By the time a submission shows up, they have usually run out of anywhere else to go.

It is also the reason somebody two years in can shut down a person who is stronger, faster, and considerably more annoyed about it.

Wrestling included

Wrestling is not a separate class here, it is inside the training. Starting from the feet is part of the curriculum, and when a round does start standing, whoever wrestles better decides who ends up on top. Chad coaches that side of the room, and there is more on the wrestling here.

Questions about no-gi
What is no-gi jiu-jitsu?
Jiu-jitsu trained without the gi — shorts and a rash guard instead. With no jacket to grab, there are no collar or sleeve grips, so control comes from underhooks, wrists, the head and body position. It moves faster and it looks more like wrestling than gi jiu-jitsu does.
Do I need a gi?
No. All adult classes are no-gi. Shorts without pockets or zippers and a t-shirt or rash guard is the whole kit.
How often do you run no-gi?
All adult classes are no-gi.
Is there a beginners class I have to do first?
No, you do not have to do a beginners class first. You work on the same thing everybody else is working on that night, next to people who have been doing this for years and will happily slow it down for you.
Do I need to be fit before I start?
No. You do not get in shape and then start — you get in shape by training. The first few weeks are hard for everybody regardless of what shape they arrived in.

Who is running the room matters as much as what is taught in it — the coaches are here.
